Winter wellbeing

Winter can be a difficult season for us all, particularly for older people and others who may need extra help over the colder months. The cold weather can bring many challenges to our health and wellbeing, however there are some things you can do to be prepared for winter to stay safe and well.

Here are our top tips:

  • Eat a balanced diet and take a vitamin D supplement
  • Keep moving around at home even when stuck indoors. Let’s get moving every hour to keep joints and muscles working and boost your circulation
  • Ensure you are up to date with your vaccinations if you are eligible
  • Stay active and get involved. Check out the activities and groups in your local area on the Dudley Community Information Directory
  • Get a snow buster winter pack from Dudley Council’s Winter Warmth Support Service on 01384 817086 or email winterwarmth@dudley.gov.uk. A pack will enable you to help your neighbours and local community to grit and clear pathways and pavements during periods of icy and snowy weather. The packs include a free shovel, a salt spreader, bags of special salt and guidance on snow clearing
  • You can be better prepared for cold weather when you know it’s coming by signing up to the MET Office weather warnings.
  • Keep a useful list of contacts handy. Dudley Council has produced a Winter wellbeing booklet which contains lots of useful advice, information and a directory of support services for those who may need extra help

If you do need extra help and support:

  • You may be worried about the cost of heating your home this winter, contact the Dudley Energy Advice line for information and practical support on 01384 817086 (Monday-Thursday, 9am-5pm and Friday 9am-4.30pm)
  • If you are concerned and struggling with the rising cost of living, there are support services to help with getting everyday essentials, household bills, care costs, debt advice. Visit dudley.gov.uk and search for ‘cost of living’
  • Find a Warm Welcome near you – these are community spaces that are safe and warm, where you can get a hot drink, stay warm and chat with friendly staff and volunteers
  • Stay connected with friends and family. If you feel unable to get out and about, or you would like to have chat, call Dudley Council’s friendly helpline Pleased to Meet You on 01384 812761
  • If you are an older person and feel lonely or isolated, join the Beacon Centre’s befriending scheme, call 01902 880111 (Monday-Friday, 9am-3pm)
