Why do I need a NHS Health Check?

Would you like to know your cholesterol, or have a diabetes test?

The NHS Health Check offers this free. You need to have blood taken but this is usually done with a finger prick test which you don’t need to fast for.  Your GP surgery will offer this service.

We know that your risk of developing heart disease, stroke, diabetes and kidney disease increases with age. There are also certain things that will put you at risk:

  • High cholesterol
  • High blood sugar levels
  • High blood pressure

You may have one of these conditions and not realise it. The NHS Health Check will let you have your results to put you in control. It will also provide you with advice and referral to free local services.

Both men and women can develop these conditions, and having one could increase your risk of developing another in the future.

Who is eligible for a NHS Health Check?

If you are aged 40-74 and do not already have diabetes, stroke, heart and kidney disease or are not being treated for high blood pressure or high cholesterol levels you are eligible for a free NHS Health Check.
