With Voluntary Sector Innovation Funding support, the Reflect Dudley project, delivered by Barnardo’s in conjunction with Dudley Council, have launched a pilot project to support parents whose children have been taken into care of the local authority permanently. The project is providing intensive support to parents who have had one or more children taken permanently into care. By providing two dedicated and experienced support workers, the project aims to help parents to reflect and understand how their circumstances have resulted in a child being removed from their care and how they can access the support they need to try to achieve the future they desire and prevent this from happening again.
Unfortunately, for some, the experience of having a child permanently removed from their care can be a repetitive one, and this is something the project particularly wishes to address. This project will aim to offer support to break this cycle by helping them to ‘understand the past, work with the present and achieve their future’. People accessing the service will receive one to one support including; contraceptive advice, assistance with housing, self-esteem and confidence building, financial advice, education and employment information but most importantly the chance to talk about the trauma they have experienced and encouragement and empowerment to shape their future.
