Getting flu is horrible! It can cause a fever, a blocked nose, a sore throat, aches and tiredness. In the most serious cases, it can cause bronchitis and pneumonia.

The nasal spray vaccine is the best defence children have against flu. It’s free, safe and painless too!

Children are ‘super spreaders’ of flu , so help protect you and your family. You will be offered a free nasal spray at school. No nasty needles, it is just a squirt up the nose. The free vaccine helps to protect you and reduces the chance of flu spreading to your friends and family.

The vaccine is free of charge to all children aged two and three, as well as pupils from Reception through to Year 6 and older children with certain long-term health conditions. It is delivered without the use of needles via a quick and painless nasal spray.

The vaccine will be administered in schools from October.

Any child who has missed their flu vaccination at school can still get it for free – please contact the school for further details.

Vaccinations for children aged two and three are delivered at GP surgeries, and parents and guardians are encouraged to contact their GP as soon as possible to arrange this.

The Flu Fighters Versus Chilly, Achy and Snotty book, will be distributed via schools to thousands of pupils across the borough. This book tells the story of three slimy alien invaders from the Planet Bogey who have come to Earth “to spread disease and make the children of Dudley cough, splutter and sneeze”. Fortunately, their dastardly plans are thwarted by a watchful nurse who protects our young heroes by giving them the nasal spray vaccine and turning them into Flu Fighters.

Children in primary and junior schools, as well as school nurseries, will each receive a copy of the book, and children who receive the vaccine receive a special sticker to show they have become a Flu Fighter. The book can also be read and downloaded by clicking the book image.

Grown ups info

Every winter up to 14,000 people in England and Wales die because of flu, but you can protect yourself. There’s a free flu vaccination for people most at risk. But as the virus changes each year, it’s important to have the flu jab every 12 months.

The FREE nasal spray vaccine is the best defence children have against flu. Here are five great reasons why your child should join the Flu Fighters – and help defeat Chilly, Achy and Snotty and their friends.

Please follow this link to access the poster that Vaccination UK developed called 5 reasons to vaccinate your child against flu.

  1. The vaccine will help protect your child against flu and serious complications like bronchitis and pneumonia.
  2. Vaccinating your child will help protect more vulnerable family members and your friends, too.
  3. There’s no nasty needles! The nasal spray is a quick squirt up the nose, nothing more – it’s easy and painless.
  4. It’s better than having flu! The nasal spray helps protect against flu, has been given to millions of children worldwide and has an excellent safety record.
  5. It can also save you money, because if your child gets flu, you might end up having to take time off work or arrange alternative childcare.

The nasal spray vaccine is offered to all children in school nursery, and from Reception up to Year 6. It is also available to all children aged two and three, and some children with some long-term health conditions, through their GP.
Most children will receive the free nasal spray vaccine at their school. If your child misses this, they can receive it at the second round of visits to schools in January. To find out when the vaccination team is visiting your child’s school please see the VACCINATION UK 19-20 Fluenz school schedule.

Please contact your child’s GP, school or nursery if you have any queries.

You can visit the NHS page to check if you are eligible for the flu vaccine. You can also visit the flu page for further information.
